Best Travel Potty for Toddlers: A Potette Buying Guide
"I have to go!" Two minutes after you left the house. Sound familiar?
Toddlers in potty training don't wait for a convenient moment, so the potty has to come to them.
That's why we made Potette. Potette is made by Kalencom, a family baby company since 1971. These are the potties we designed for car trips, parks and grandma's house. Here's how they compare.
Short on space? Start here. The Potette Fold N Go Potty folds to about 1 cm and pops up in seconds, so it can live in the diaper bag or the car door full time. Loved by UK parents. Shop the Fold N Go
Before you buy: what matters
Size, first. If it doesn't fit in the diaper bag or the door pocket of the car, it'll stay home, and then it's no help at all. After that, look for a seat your child feels steady on and a cleanup plan you can manage in a parking lot. A potty that also works on a regular toilet is a nice bonus, since plenty of public restrooms have one and toddlers often find the big seat a little scary.
One more thing: using the same potty at home and away can help, because toddlers like what they know.
2-in-1 Potette Plus: the all-rounder
This is our most flexible model. The 2-in-1 Potette Plus opens into a standalone potty with the legs locked in place, or folds the other way to sit on top of a regular toilet as a trainer seat. It folds flat, so it slides into a diaper bag or under the car seat.
At home you can pair it with the reusable Collapsible Liner. On the road, switch to disposable liners. Same potty either way, which is kind of the point.
It comes in a few colors, including Pastel Mint, Misty and Plum. If you're starting from zero, the Value Pack includes the potty, a collapsible liner and 3 disposable liners.
Potette Premium: for kids who like handles
Some toddlers want something to hang on to. The Potette Premium, in White or Teal, has easy-grip handles, a raised splash guard and a contoured seat on a sturdy, well-balanced base. It still folds flat for your purse or bag.
The Premium Value Pack adds a reusable hard liner, so it can pull double duty as the home potty too.
Fold N Go: the glove-box backup
The Fold N Go Potty folds down to about 1 cm thick. That's thin enough to live in the glove box and be forgotten about until you need it. It's made for 15 months and up, to a maximum of 50 lbs. It makes a good backup for the car even if you already own a Potette Plus.
Want liners ready from day one? Start with the Fold N Go Starter Bundle.
Liners make it work
Liners are what make on-the-go potty breaks bearable. Potette disposable liners hold up to 5 oz, are lightly scented, and have handles that hook onto the potty and then tie shut when you're done. They come in packs of 10, 20, 30 and 90. Our tip: keep a handful in the diaper bag and the big box at home.
Using a different brand of potty at grandma's? Universal Potty Liners are 18x13 in, absorb up to 150 ml and are made to fit a wide range of potties, from the Potette Plus to full-size ones. 36 to a pack.
The reusable Collapsible Liner is soft and flexible, easy to empty and rinse, and stores flat.
Little helpers
The 3-in-1 Potette Timer lights up and plays a song when it's time to try, which takes you out of the nagging role. It doubles as a night light. The Potty Training Flash Cards are 9 picture cards inspired by American Sign Language, created with potty training expert Susan Wallace, so kids who can't quite say it yet can still tell you. And MyWipes are a travel pack of cotton wipes you wet with your own water, with no soaps, lotion, alcohol or fragrance added.
Quick pick?
If you only buy one potty, get the Potette Plus Value Pack, since it covers home and travel. If your toddler likes handles or you want the splash guard, go with the Premium. Want a backup that takes up no room? The Fold N Go. Already set on potties? Just restock liners or grab the Universal ones.
Tips for potty training on the go
Let your child practice on the travel potty at home before the first outing. A brand-new contraption in a strange bathroom is a lot to ask.
Offer a try before you buckle the car seat, and again when you arrive. Pack a spare outfit no matter how well things are going.
And when accidents happen (they will), keep it low-key. It's a phase, not a report card.
