The Diaper Bag Checklist: What to Pack and Which Bag to Choose
Leaving the house with a baby shouldn't take a 40-item list.
You need about a dozen things, and a bag where you can find them one-handed with a baby on your hip. Here's our checklist, plus which Kalencom bag fits your routine.
Pack this
For changes: diapers (figure one every two to three hours, plus a spare), wipes, a changing mat, diaper cream, and a bag for anything wet or dirty on the way home.
For feeding: bottles or formula, or snacks if your baby's older. A bib and a burp cloth. A spoon and a small container once solids start. Water for yourself, which is easy to forget.
For comfort: a change of clothes (two for newborns, honestly), a light blanket or muslin, a pacifier on a clip, and the favorite small toy or lovey.
For you: phone, keys, wallet, hand sanitizer, tissues, and any medicine your family needs.
What makes a bag work
Insulated pockets matter more than people expect. They keep bottles cool and away from the diaper stash. Lots of small pockets beat one big cavern. A wipe-clean outside will save you on the day a bottle leaks. And if you push a stroller, stroller straps or a crossbody option let you stop juggling.
Find your bag
Chicago Diaper Backpack: hands free
For the parent who wants both hands free and everything in its own spot. The Chicago (in Falcon or Asphalt) has 2 insulated side pockets, a front pocket with 2 more pockets inside it, a back pocket and 3 interior pockets. The shoulder straps also convert to a crossbody strap, which is handy when you're in and out of the car all day.
Nola Tote: easy to dig through
The Nola Tote opens wide, so you can see what you've got. It has dual insulated side pockets, plenty of pockets inside and out, and built-in stroller straps. The Toffee version is a durable synthetic cotton with a water-resistant exterior, and it comes with a changing pad and adjustable stroller straps.
Buckle Bag: wipe-clean
The Buckle Bag has a matte coating you can barely see, but it wipes clean when the inevitable happens. A magnetic clip holds the flap shut. Inside there are three pockets and two elastic bottle pockets.
Diaper Clutch: quick errands
For a quick errand, the full bag is overkill. The Diaper Clutch zips closed, has two pockets outside and two inside, and includes a padded changing pad. Toss it in the stroller basket or your own purse.
Small add-ons, big difference
Our Saro changing mats (Funny Farm, Spring Cottage and Polaris Glacier Grey) fold up small, wipe clean and close with Velcro.
For food, the Saro Thermal Bag keeps baby's meals together and at temperature. The Fly Free and Little Explorers thermal bags have two insulated compartments, so hot and cold stay apart for about 3 to 4 hours.
A pacifier holder case keeps two clean pacifiers ready, and the Foxy silicone pacifier holder clips one to baby's clothes so it stays off the floor. Snacks go in the Set of 3 Lunch Boxes - Little Explorers, which nest together when they're empty.
Habits that save the day
Restock the minute you get home. Future you, at 7 a.m. with a crying baby, will be grateful.
Keep the insulated pockets for food only. Then you always know where the bottle is.
Put the spare outfit in a zip pouch. On the way home it becomes the wet bag.
Your keys and phone go in an outside pocket, not under the burp cloths. And expect the list to change: a newborn bag is all diapers and feeding, while a toddler bag is mostly snacks and something to keep them busy.
Quick answers
Backpack or tote?
A backpack like the Chicago keeps your hands free and spreads the weight. A tote like the Nola is easier to dig through and hangs on the stroller. Some families use one of each, plus the clutch for short trips.
Which bags include a changing pad?
The Diaper Clutch and the Nola Tote in Toffee. For the others, add a foldable Saro changing mat.
How do I clean them?
The Buckle Bag's coating wipes clean, and the Nola Toffee has a water-resistant outside. Check each product page for specifics.
